Los Angeles (AP)
Late last night, it was reported that the Los Angeles Centurions have fired head coach Randy Edsall, and that former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator, and Detroit Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg would be named the head coach. Those rumors were confirmed today by Cents owner/general manager, Jay Amado. "Today is a great day for the Los Angeles Centurions," he stated, in a written statement. "Randy Edsall is a good head coach, who will be coaching football for a long time. There just comes a time when players don't respond to a specific coach, and I think we reached that point here in Los Angeles. We're very excited to welcome Marty Mornhinweg to Los Angeles, and are confident that he'll be able to put the Centurions back on track, and get us moving in the right direction." Mornhinweg was unable to be reached for comment, but the Cents have set a press conference for tomorrow at 3:30 PST/6:30 EST, where he is expected to be introduced, along with staff members Bobby Turner, who will be named offensive coordinator and assistant head coach, and Ken Norton Jr. who is expected to be named defensive coordinator. Edsall was head coach of the Centurions for four seasons. During his tenure, he compiled just a 19-43 record, and Los Angeles never made the playoffs. Marty Mornhinweg was formerly the head coach for the NFL's Detroit Lions where he went 5-27 before being fired after just two seasons. For the last six years he has been assistant head coach to Andy Reid, with the Philadelphia Eagles, and served as the offensive coordinator for the last four. Mornhinweg wasted no time in putting together his staff. Bobby Turner was named the offensive coordinator, and assistant head coach. Turner is well-versed in the west coast offense, having been the running backs coach under Mike Shanahan with the Denver Broncos for 15 years. He is expected to install parts of the Broncos' zone blocking scheme in Los Angeles. Ken Norton Jr. is a face familiar to many football fans in Los Angeles, and he'll take over the defensive coordinator job. After retiring from a successful football career with UCLA in college, and Dallas and San Francisco in the NFL he took a coaching job with Pete Carroll at the University of Southern California. As a linebackers coach, and defensive coordinator at USC he helped developed former Trojan standouts Lofa Tatupu, Keith Rivers, Brian Cushing, Rey Maualuga, Kaluka Maiava, and Clay Matthews. |
